Predicting Academic Difficulty Among First-Semester College Students

Higher education retention research has taken on renewed importance in recent years with support for standardized entrance exams waning and student loan debts commanding social political attention. Economic pressures have further exasperated college attrition push researchers to better identify at-risk students before they experience academic difficulty. The purpose of this study was evaluate the predictive quality precollege motivation, self-efficacy learning, learner autonomy, perceived first-semester outcome. Participants completed established surveys assessing four variables prior start Fall 2021 semester. semester outcome obtained at conclusion naturally differentiating into one two categories: satisfactory standing or probation. Discriminant analysis performed determine if predictor could reliably predict Results indicated that accurately outcomes 77.8% classification accuracy. Academic motivation found a negligible impact maintaining same accuracy its absence. Implications admissions practice are discussed.
